The world of Grey Hack is shared by all players, allowing them to build a reputation and work together to complete challenging missions.

Each network in Grey Hack has a unique configuration, size, and level of security, creating a dynamic and varied experience. Players can use social engineering and scan for errors to find the best way to infiltrate a system. Exploiting security flaws and covering their tracks is key to success.

The terminal is a powerful tool which is used to carry out attacks and is based on real UNIX commands. Players can modify existing terminal commands as well as create their own. Similarly, they can customize existing exploits or create their own if the pre-existing ones are not suitable.

In addition to the multiplayer mode, Grey Hack also offers a single player mode. In this mode, the game is played on the players' computer and progress is saved when they exit the game.
