The gameplay of KAIKAN revolves around the player's ability to annihilate enemies. These bonus items can be attracted to the player's aircraft by releasing the shot button. However, if the player presses the shot button again while the items are being attracted, they will fall once more. Collecting these bonus items not only increases the player's score but also raises the item rank and increases the number of bonus items available. It is important to note that missing a bonus item will cause the player's rank to drop.

In addition to the bonus items obtained by destroying enemies, players can also obtain bonus items by hitting enemies with bombs. When a bomb is used, the enemy bullets on the screen are converted into a bomb bonus item. It is essential to use bombs strategically to clear the path and eliminate as many enemies as possible. However, if the player gets hit while holding a bomb, they will lose it. Fortunately, an auto-barrier is activated in such situations, providing some protection.
