However, the German headquarters reinforced the outer perimeter of the encirclement with elements of the 10th Motorized Infantry Division (10MID) and the SS "Das Reich" division, aiming to prevent a breakthrough.

The game begins on September 14, 1941, as German troops capture the towns of Lokhvitsa and Lubny. The 9th Tank Division (1st Tank Army) approaches Lokhvitsa from the southeast, while the 3rd Tank Division (2nd Tank Army) approaches from the north. By September 15, the encirclement around the 5th, 21st, 26th, and 37th Soviet armies of the SWF is complete, with the SWF headquarters also trapped. On the night of September 18, the Soviet High Command (Stavka) gives permission for the 37th Army troops to escape from Kiev. The order for the encircled Soviet armies to break through to the east is issued on the evening of September 17. The 38th and 40th Armies, which are outside the encirclement, are tasked with supporting the exit of the SWF troops by launching attacks on Romny and Lubny.

To strengthen the defense of the encirclement, the Southern Front transfers the 2nd Cavalry Corps (5th and 9th Cavalry Divisions) to the SWF's defense zone. This transfer leads to the formation of the Cavalry Mechanized Group (CMG) under the command of General Belov. The CMG consists of the 2nd Cavalry Corps, the 1st Tank Brigade, the 129th Tank Brigade, and the 100th Rifle Division. On September 19, the 2nd Cavalry Division (2nd Cavalry Corps) receives orders to launch an attack towards Romny and capture the bridges across the Sula River. The 129th Tank Brigade is immediately deployed to the front line after its formation, resulting in a lack of coordination among the personnel recruited from different units. The brigade consists of three tank battalions and one motorized rifle battalion.

In order to prevent the encirclement from being breached, the German forces reinforce the outer perimeter with elements of the 10th Motorized Infantry Division and the SS "Das Reich" division. The 41st Motorized Infantry Regiment (10MID) moves behind the 3rd Tank Division and establishes a bridgehead on the Sula River east of Romny. The main forces of the 10MID advance towards the crossings on the northern bank of the Sula River near Korovnitsy. The SS "Das Reich" division, having made a forced march through Priluki, is transferred to the area west of Romny. The 41st Motorized Infantry Regiment is placed under its subordination, and the engineering battalion of the SS "Das Reich" division ensures the division's crossings across the Sula River. The division is ordered to advance towards Korovnitsy with the support of three battalions from the SS Assault Regiment (AR).
