Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2: Steel Inferno is an epic expansion to the acclaimed War in the East 2 series. It offers 8 new scenarios and 2 campaigns that provide an in-depth look at some of the most pivotal offensives of the war in the East. With the addition of Yugoslavia in 1944 and Finnish forces in the area just north of Leningrad, the game provides a comprehensive look at the war in the East.

The 1943 campaign begins with the famous Operation Citadel, the largest tank battle in history. Players can explore different strategies to see how the Germans could recover from the Stalingrad debacle, while the Soviet player attempts to beat the Allies to Berlin. The 1944 campaign starts with the Soviets preparing for the massive Summer 1944 offensives which led to the destruction of Army Group Center, and the capitulation of Romania and Finland. Players can enjoy a full-map campaign and see if they can do better than the real-life events.

In addition to the two full campaigns, Steel Inferno also features 6 other scenarios covering a range of operations. These include Operation Kutuzov which saw the Soviets retake Orel and push on towards Smolensk, and Road to Karelia which covers the German push to capture Leningrad, and the Finnish effort to push the Soviets out of Finnish Karelian territory. The German attempt to capture the oil fields of the Caucasus in Summer 1942 is also included, as well as Case Blue Phase II which covers the German attack to seize Stalingrad and the rush south into the Caucasus. Drama on the Danube covers the unusual and varied fighting across the Balkans in 1944-45, from the conversion of Romania and Bulgaria into Soviet allies, to the desperate attempt of the German forces in Greece to escape north.
