Civil War: 1861 is a historical strategy game that covers the opening battles of the American Civil War. The game includes both small and large actions of the year 1861, starting with the battle at 'Big Bethel' and moving on to the comparatively vast engagements at 'Bull Run' and 'Wilson's Creek'.

In 1861, both the Union and Confederate sides had plenty of volunteer recruits who lacked battlefield experience. The weaponry used during this time still belonged to the Napoleonic Era, with a plethora of muzzle-loading smoothbore artillery. The commanders of the armies were still junior officers in the battles recreated in this game.

Players can command the Union or Confederate forces in these key battles. The game allows players to change history, but it requires a lot of strategic planning and tactical skill. The battles in the game are based on historic events, and players can play the missions as either Union or Confederate.
