Players get to explore an exotic world and uncover the layers of ancient civilizations that have been preserved for thousands of years. You can choose to play as either a mutant native to the salt-spangled dunes and jungles of Qud, or a pure-strain descendant from one of the few remaining eco-domes.

The world of Qud is filled with a variety of characters, creatures, and locations. Players can customize their character with over 70 mutations and defects, 24 castes and kits, and various weapons, ranging from rifles to vibroblades. As you explore procedurally generated regions, you'll come across familiar places such as the oasis-hamlet of Joppa and the fabled Spindle. Qud also features biologically diverse and richly cultured environments with over 60 factions to choose from, such as apes, crabs, robots, and highly entropic beings.

You can dig through walls and hack off the limbs of monsters, as every monster and NPC is fully simulated. There's also a plot to follow that will take you to Barathrum the Old, a sentient cave bear who leads a sect of tinkers. As you progress, you'll find out more about the lore of Caves of Qud, from legendary items to in-game history books written by plant historians. But beware, the game is quite difficult and deaths are permanent.
