In Ballads of Hongye, players take on the role of a local magistrate tasked with reviving the lands of Hongye County by carefully planning and acting to complete various challenges in different environments. Through this city-builder strategy game, players will build a thriving city and unravel an engaging story.

Ballads of Hongye is a unique city-building strategy game that takes place in the ancient eastern architecture. As the local magistrate, it is your responsibility to carefully plan and act to complete different challenges across various environments in order to earn the right to rule the lands. You must build a thriving city and revive Hongye County, while discovering a unique story.

There are three modes for play in Ballads of Hongye; Hard Challenge Mode, Easy Challenge Mode, and Serene Mode. In Hard Challenge Mode, you must complete challenge goals within a year and maintain stability until the year-end to earn the right to rule new lands. In Easy Challenge Mode, you simply complete challenge goals without any time pressure to earn the right to rule new lands. Finally, in Serene Mode, you must slowly expand your land and building collection through income earned to grow over time without any challenge goals or time-pressure.

Hongye has been long forgotten and left to decay by the Emperor. Your task is to revive it and bring prosperity to the land. To do this, you must secure profit and stable growth, as every choice you make will contribute to the destiny of the land you rule. You will have to tend to the council's requests, manage your advisers, lead your people, and continuously nurture and utilize your lands to prosper, while fighting against both natural and urban disasters.

You must take advantage of industrial chains, use your advisers to their fullest potential, decide on your investments, and build your way to victory. Keep your people happy, your treasury full, and your cities secure, as the evaluation council will judge you for all your actions. As you progress, you may discover a force working against you and discover that nothing is as it seems.

To revive Hongye, you must be prepared to make sacrifices and decide whether you will be respected through love and admiration, or feared as a leader. The attributes of the land will greatly impact production, security and commerce, providing a unique playing field and experience for each challenge. Cleverly designed challenges will test your mettle and you must be prepared to face natural disasters such as pests, droughts, famines, fires and floods.

You must recruit advisers to help manage your lands and attend to their needs, while trying to prevent them from being poached by other counties. You must also hone your own skills with a talent tree and unlock new talents to assist you with disaster, adviser, and town management. Additionally, you must build markets, workshops, banks, and other special buildings to ensure Hongye's revival.

As you progress, the story behind Hongye will unravel. You will begin to understand why it was chosen, who created the successive accidents, and who is blocking your plans for urban restoration. Ballads of Hongye offers a unique mix of city-building and strategy, while presenting a unique story with plenty of challenges to keep you engaged.
