The game has two main modes: the first is the Scenarios mode, which introduces players to the simulation step by step and tasks them with building an ecosystem that meets specific requirements. The second mode is the Sandbox, which grants players far more freedom and power to design their own planet. In the Sandbox, players can use the procedural planet generator to create a desert, underwater or any other kind of world they can think of. They can also define up to eight seasons and continue to edit their environment as they please. This mode also offers the exciting feature of random mutations, where players can watch their plants and animals evolve and compete for resources in real-time.

The Sapling's gameplay is open-ended and encourages creative expression, allowing players to design plants and animals however they'd like. Players can design small flowers that glow in the dark, black algae specialized for planets without much sunlight, or even giant trees covered in spikes. In the skies, they can create flying carnivores specialized for diving and catching prey underwater.
