The Taipings Game is a recreation of the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64), one of the deadliest civil wars in Chinese history, which resulted in the deaths of millions. Players can choose to take the role of either the Taiping rebels, who are fighting to create their own state, or the Qing Emperor, who must crush the revolt and its foreign allies before their dynasty is toppled.

The Taiping rebels and their allies have access to a range of units, such as levies, militias, Chinese or Manchu Banners, cavalry, bandits, triads, Foreign infantry, sailors, cannons, and transport junks. The Qing forces also have access to a variety of units, such as warships and artillery. In addition, both sides must be wary of foreign powers, as they can both be a nuisance or an ally depending on the situation.

The game features an economic system with incomes coming from the cities and ports controlled by the players, as well as the agricultural lands.
