The battle of Hué is a historically significant event that took place during the audacious 1968 Tết offensive launched by the Communists in the Vietnam War. This battle, known for its length and brutality, serves as the backdrop for the SGS Battle For: Hue game. As the third installment in the SGS Battle Series, this game focuses on intense fights and battles in lesser-known but strategically important locations. With a "grand tactical" scale, players can command regiment, battalion, company, and even platoon-size units, depending on the specific game.
The Battle of Hué occurred from January 30 to March 3, 1968, as part of the Tet offensive. It was a protracted and violent confrontation between the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong against the American forces in both urban and rural areas. Hué, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, held great political, cultural, and geographical significance. With its rich history and symbolic value for Vietnam, it became a strategic target for both the NVA and the Viet Cong.
SGS Battle For: Hue faithfully recreates the battle on a "grand tactical" scale. The game utilizes counters to represent companies, platoons, sections, and groups/squads, while each game turn corresponds to one day of real time. This turn-based gameplay allows players to engage with the AI, play against another player in a "hot seat" mode, or engage in play-by-email matches. Both the "Free World" forces and the "Communists" are playable, offering different perspectives on the battle.
The game features a campaign scenario that allows players to simulate the entire battle, utilizing around 500 counters and lasting several hours. Additionally, there are smaller scenarios available, with more to be added after the game's release. In the campaign scenario, the Communist player aims to seize as many sectors of Hué and its surrounding areas as possible, ensuring the supply and reinforcement of units in the city's districts. The longer the Communist player holds on to symbolic points, the greater their chances of victory. On the other hand, the Free World player must first resist the enemy's offensive and then strive to regain lost ground as quickly as possible.
Players must carefully balance their strengths and weaknesses while navigating complex terrains such as dense urban areas, military installations, villages, and rice paddies. Each terrain type has specific modifiers that influence movement and combat, making offensive operations challenging without proper coordination of unit strengths.
The "Free World" forces consist of heterogeneous units, with South Vietnamese units varying in value and firepower, and American units being powerful but mobility-restricted if they suffer high casualties. Artillery plays a devastating role but has limited use initially due to political constraints. On the other hand, Communist forces are more homogeneous, with excellent overall morale but increasing numerical disadvantage. They rely on fortifications, barricades, tunnels, and harassment actions to hold on as long as possible. Losing certain areas on the outskirts of Hué leads to reduced supplies and effectiveness.
To succeed in the game, players must learn how to combine their forces effectively during detailed battle phases. For example, an infantry company without support from other units is likely to fail. The Marines' M48A3 tanks are invaluable in attracting enemy fire, allowing the infantry to lead the assault with fewer losses. Viet Cong units, though diminished, become more mobile, making them harder to eliminate. The game also includes various support units, CS gas attacks, sniper elements, patrols, mortar/artillery fire, sapper counters, and more, allowing for numerous tactical combinations.
The game's author conducted extensive research to ensure historical accuracy, similar to their work on SGS NATO's Nightmare. Unlike other SGS games, cards primarily serve to authorize unit activation, with few other cards present. The activation system in SGS Battle For: Hue allows units to move permanently, even without being activated by a card. The time required to complete a game varies depending on the scenario, and the replayability is significant due to the activation system, unit combinations, and the detailed terrain based on the 1968 staff map.
In the campaign scenario, neither side has a real advantage. The Communist player begins with numerical superiority, greater firepower, and the element of surprise. However, as the game progresses, reinforcements from the "Free World" forces tip the balance, forcing the Communists onto the defensive. Yet, the South Vietnamese and Americans also face challenges, as advancing into the city is difficult and attacking can result in heavy losses without careful planning and the creation of combined arms groups to overcome the enemy's entrenchments.
SGS Battle For: Hue offers players a deeper understanding of the difficulties and stakes of this significant battle. The game's level of detail makes it easy to learn, and its release date is set for April 18, 2024. Developed by Strategy Game Studio and published by Avalon Digital, this strategy game falls under the strategy genre. With its historical accuracy, immersive gameplay, and the ability to experience one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, SGS Battle For: Hue promises to be an engaging and challenging gaming experience.
