Players can build trams, subways, commuter, regional, and high-speed trains. They can also build tunnels, viaducts and ground tracks and will have to navigate the trade-offs between the environment, train speed, and their company’s wallet.

The game simulates train and station demand with simulated individual passengers. Passengers can, and will, engage in train trips that involve boarding multiple trains, waiting in transfer stations, and so on. Demand flow is based on time of day and time of week with time zone support. Passengers will rate their experience based on the trip time and the fares imposed on them, which will in turn affect the demand of the stations they visit.

NIMBY Rails can be played in single-player mode or, alternatively, players can opt for a cooperative multiplayer mode where they can build together in real time with friends and others they invite to their hosted server session.
