In Maia, players take on the role of a colony builder in the not-too-distant future. You must guide your colonists as they make planetfall on a hostile world, ensuring their safety and survival by constructing an off-world habitat from the ground up and protecting them from the dangerous environment they find themselves in.

Maia is a space colony simulation game set in the not-so-distant future. In this game, your colonists make planetfall on a hostile and dangerous world. The task is to ensure the survival and safety of your colonists, and build their off-world habitat from almost nothing. Developed by independent developer Simon Roth, Maia offers a unique challenge to players who must use their skills of management and creativity to build a base and protect their colonists from the hostile environment.

The planet Maia is twelve light years away from Earth and circles Tau Ceti. Its atmosphere is toxic, its surface is ravaged by solar flares, super storms, and meteor blasts, and its unstable crust is constantly shifted by catastrophic earthquakes. However, this planet is theoretically habitable, and it is up to the player to colonise this poison eden and make it a viable home for their colonists.

The player must burrow into Maia's mineral rich crust to build and manage a complex base to meet the needs of their colonists. This base should provide them with somewhere to sleep, somewhere to build and a steady supply of food, water and energy. The player must also protect their base from the planet's toxic atmosphere by managing the airlocks, atmosphere generators, heaters and air vents.

The game offers several different ways to test the player's management and creativity. There is a fully fledged narrative campaign, stand alone missions, and several custom sandbox modes. All of these require the player to make use of the resources available on Maia and research new ways to use the planet's flora and fauna to their advantage.

One of the features of the game is the advanced colonists AI. The player does not have direct control of their colonists, who instead operate on their own initiative in fulfilling their wants and needs. The player must take care of both their physical and mental well-being if they are to survive. The colonists will learn new skills, form bonds and relationships, suggest changes to your base and even create poetry and music.

The player is also aided by an army of robots. These robots are designed to help the player in their mission, such as the I.M.P. robot which digs through Maia's crust to collect minerals, and the Utility Repair Robot which is responsible for routine maintenance.

The game also offers a first person mode, allowing the player to experience Maia through the eyes of their pet AIs. In this mode, the player can assume direct control of robots, doors and cameras and explore their base in first person.

In addition to this, the player can also genetically engineer super chickens to create new sources of food. They must build hydroponics, raise livestock and even capture and domesticate alien fauna.

Maia is powered by a custom game engine which allows for deep simulation across multiple cores of modern CPUs. The game also features a fascinating ambient soundtrack, recorded from real antique synthesisers onto tape.
