Players can execute enveloping maneuvers by taking key towns and cutting off roads and railroads to disable large groups of enemy units quickly using the unique supply system. The AI is flexible, allowing for mistakes in lower settings and detecting strategic mistakes and exploiting them on the highest difficulty levels.

The game offers a massive branching campaign with over 60 scenarios, random events for both the campaign and each scenario, and customization options for the entire army and individual units.
