Graviteam Tactics: Don Bend is a historically accurate simulation and strategy game that takes place during World War II. Set in July 1942, the game focuses on the intense battles between the German and Soviet forces in the bend of the Don River. The German troops have successfully broken through the Soviet defenses and are advancing towards the crossings near Kalach. Their mission is to cut off and defeat elements of the Soviet 62nd Army.

The Soviet headquarters responds to the German breakthrough by forming the 1st Tank Army (1TA), consisting of two Tank Corps (TC). These Tank Corps are tasked with launching a counterattack against the enemy forces that have penetrated their defensive lines. The Soviet forces are fighting under the Stalingrad Front, desperately trying to halt the German advance.

On the morning of July 23, 1942, the German forces, comprising two Tank Divisions (TD) and one Motorized Infantry Division (MID), launched a fierce offensive against the 62nd Army. They broke through the Soviet flank and began spreading eastward, utilizing tanks and motorized infantry in the Kletskaya - svfm Kopanya area. The German air force played a significant role in supporting their ground forces, continuously attacking the Soviet units, bombing railway junctions, and destroying wire communications.

By noon on July 24, some German units had reached the Ostrov, Volinsky area. Their ultimate goal was to reach the right bank of the Don River, capture the crossings, and isolate and destroy parts of the Soviet 62nd Army. The German 3rd Motorized Infantry Division (3MID) was assigned the task of capturing the crossings at Kalach, while the 53rd Motorized Cavalry Brigade (53mcbn) aimed to suppress a small bridgehead on the right bank of the Don River and secure the bridges.

To counter the German offensive, the 1st Tank Army mobilized its forces. The army consisted of the following units:

1. 13th Tank Corps (163rd, 166th, and 169th Tank Brigades), which operated under the command of the 62nd Army and fought in the svfm Pervomaisky area.
