From the years 600 to 628 AD, the Byzantine Empire faced a fierce struggle for survival against the aggressive Sassanid Persian Empire. Despite the odds, the Byzantines emerged victorious, only to face a new threat in the form of the Arab conquest in 634 AD. The Muslim Arab Empire quickly defeated both the Byzantines and the Persians, establishing its dominance from Spain to India by 750 AD.

While the Byzantines managed to survive the initial wave of Islamic advance, they faced a year-long siege of Constantinople in 717-718 AD. This marked the beginning of the end for the Umayyad Caliphate. Eventually, internal unrest and defeats on the frontiers led to the downfall of the Umayyads, and the Abbasid dynasty took their place. The once-great Islamic Empire splintered into numerous competing states. On the other hand, the Byzantine Empire grew stronger under the Macedonian Dynasty (867-1056) and became more powerful than it had been in centuries.

In Northern Europe, the Viking raids began in the late 8th century. These skilled sailors used their longboats to strike towns, farms, and monasteries across the Baltic and North Seas, raiding as far as Seville and Constantinople. They eventually settled down and established important states in Normandy and the Kievan Rus. Their invasions of the British Isles resulted in centuries of intermittent warfare with the English, Irish, and Scottish kingdoms.

Meanwhile, Charlemagne ruled as the King of the Franks from 768 to 814 AD. His empire already included most of modern France and parts of Germany when he inherited it. By the time of his death, his empire expanded to encompass modern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, northern Italy, and a strip of northern Spain. In 800 AD, he was crowned "Emperor of the Romans" by Pope Leo III. After his death, the Carolingian Empire split into West Francia (modern France) and East Francia (modern Germany).

In the 9th century, the Magyars emerged as a nomadic force in Europe. Their raids reached as far as Spain until they were defeated by the Germans at Lechfeld in 955 AD. After their defeat, they accepted Christianity, and their High Prince was recognized as the King of Hungary, ruling under the name István (Stephen) I.

The expansion includes 19 new factions, such as Andalusians, Bulgars, Croatians, Dailami, Fatimids, French, Ghaznavids, Khazars, Khorasanians, Magyars, Moravians, Navarrese, Normans, Pechenegs, Polish, Rus, Scots, Serbians, and Vikings. Additionally, there are 55 new units and 76 new army lists, expanding the total number of army lists to 281.

Players can engage in six new Epic Battles, including Yarmouk in 636 AD (Byzantines vs Arabs), Ashdown in 871 AD (Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings), Lechfeld in 955 AD (East Franks vs Magyars), Apamea in 998 AD (Byzantines vs Fatimid Egyptians), Chach in 1001 AD (Indians vs Ghaznavids), and Clontarf in 1018 AD (Irish and Vikings vs Vikings and Irish). There are also 74 new Quick Battles available for players to enjoy.

The expansion also enhances the Custom Battles and Sandbox Campaign modules, allowing players to access all 281 army lists from previous DLCs. In addition, there are six new historically-based campaigns, including the Arab Conquest, Basil II (Byzantine Resurgence), Charlemagne, Mahmud of Ghazni, Wolves from the Sea 1 (Viking Age from Viking point of view), and Wolves from the Sea 2 (Viking Age from the enemy's point of view).
