Just like his legendary great-grandfather, Allan Quatermain, James is an adventurer by trade. However, he both exploits and despises his great-grandfather's famous name. He is not a believer in the supernatural tales associated with his family history and dislikes those who mock them.

At the beginning of the game, James is reluctant to escort Jennifer Goodwin, a former colleague and US agent, to an Egyptian temple in search of an ancient artifact called The Heart of Atlantis. He doesn't believe in the artifact's reputed invigorating qualities and is uninterested in the fact that the Nazi occult division, Ahnenerbe, is also after it.

However, James' perspective quickly changes as he finds himself caught up in a global hunt. From the stormy deserts of Egypt to the freezing depths of the Arctic and the steamy jungles of Guatemala, James and Agent Goodwin must stay one step ahead of both the Nazis and the Russians in their quest to obtain the Heart of Atlantis. Along the way, they discover long-forgotten temple structures and awaken ancient guardians that prove his great-grandfather's stories were not as far-fetched as he believed.
