The player takes on the role of a captain who leads and manages a medieval mercenary company as they embark on a personal quest to defeat the arena champions. The game features an open-world region known as the Midlands, where the player can encounter random events as they travel to havens to take on contracts, hire men, and resupply. The player can explore caves, ruins, graveyards, abandoned fortresses, and engage in turn-based tactical combat in the tactical map.

Dead Monarchy features a detailed and complex turn-based tactical combat system where the player can lead up to 18 mercenaries during combat. The overworld locations match up with tactical maps, allowing players to fight in fields, camps, caves, ruins, graveyards, and abandoned fortresses. The game also offers freedom in an open-world sandbox environment where players can take on contracts to exterminate outlaws, bandits, and raiders or become one themselves and eventually have the noble houses hunt them down. Players can become a trader, craft and sell equipment or follow the overarching story and train to become the arena champion.
