The story begins with a chance encounter between the protagonist, Crono, and a girl named Marle at Guardia's Millennial Fair in Leene Square. As they explore the fair together, they come across the Telepod, a new invention by Crono's friend Lucca. Marle volunteers to assist in a demonstration, but an unexpected malfunction sends her hurtling through a dimensional rift. Crono, holding onto Marle's pendant, bravely follows her into the rift, only to emerge in a world four centuries before his own. This sets in motion an epic quest that spans different time periods, leading to the very End of Time. The fate of the planet hangs in the balance, and history is about to be made once again.

One of the key features of CHRONO TRIGGER is its Active Time Battle Version 2 system. During battles, time does not stop, allowing players to enter commands when a character's gauge is full. The positions of enemies change as time passes, requiring players to choose their actions wisely based on the evolving situation.

The game also introduces "Tech" moves and combos. Players can unleash special abilities and magic called "Tech" moves during battles. Characters can combine their abilities to execute unique combo attacks. With over 50 different types of combos, players can create powerful and devastating combinations between two or three characters.

CHRONO TRIGGER offers two additional dungeons to explore: the "Dimensional Vortex" and the "Lost Sanctum".
